Vollkorn

Vollkorn was created by Friedrich Althausen and released openly in 2005, making it one of the earlier serious open-source text serifs. The name — German for wholegrain — reflects the author's intention: a sturdy, unpretentious type suited to everyday reading rather than display performance. Its old-style characteristics include moderate contrast, angled stress, and bracketed serifs, but the design has been progressively extended and refined over many years into a variable font spanning six weights. Vollkorn includes a full italic across all weights and performs reliably in both screen and print environments, making it a practical choice for publications that span both media.
