Spectral

Spectral was designed by Production Type and released in 2017, commissioned by Google specifically for document and editorial reading on screen. Its proportions, spacing, and ink-trap details are calibrated for on-screen rendering rather than adapted from a print original. The design was developed in part for use in Google Docs, which makes its behaviour in continuous body text at typical document sizes its primary test. Spectral covers seven weights with a full italic companion; it is a static family without a variable axis. The editorial weight range — from ExtraLight to ExtraBold — gives it flexibility for structured editorial layouts while its screen-first DNA keeps it legible at body sizes.
