Piazzolla
Piazzolla was designed by Nicolás Silva at Huerta Tipográfica and released in 2020. The family is named after Astor Piazzolla, the Buenos Aires composer who redefined tango by introducing harmonic complexity from jazz and classical music — an influence that translates into a typeface identity built around tension between legibility and expressive contrast. The design uses a variable optical size axis alongside nine weights, allowing the letterforms to shift character significantly from compact text settings to large display use: at text optical sizes the design is functional and legible; at display sizes the contrast increases and the personality of the letterforms becomes more pronounced. Italic is available throughout the weight range. Coverage extends to Latin, Cyrillic, and Greek. The optical axis makes it technically versatile across a wide range of applications; its natural context is editorial and cultural publishing where the typographic voice is part of the design.
