Newsreader

Newsreader was designed by Production Type and commissioned by Google for news and editorial contexts. The design sits in the transitional serif tradition — moderate-to-high contrast, bracketed serifs, relatively vertical axis — but with proportions and spacing calibrated for the specific demands of news layout: large headline sizes, decks, pull quotes, and body text that must perform well in multi-column layouts. Seven weights from ExtraLight to ExtraBold are available as a variable font, with a full italic throughout the range. Production Type is a Paris-based studio with a track record in editorial typography, and Newsreader reflects that discipline: clearly motivated by practical requirements rather than stylistic novelty. The combination of full italic coverage, a broad weight range, and genuine editorial pedigree gives it a strong claim in any news or magazine context.
