Literata

Literata was designed by Type Together — Veronika Burian and José Scaglione — and released in 2017, commissioned by Google as the reading typeface for Google Books and Google Play Books. The brief was demanding: a serif that performs across a wide range of screen sizes and resolutions, from e-reader displays to large desktop monitors, while maintaining readability in continuous long-form text. Type Together addressed this through an optical size variable axis that adapts letterform proportions, contrast, and spacing across the opsz range. Eight weights are available, with a full italic at every weight, and the design covers Latin, Cyrillic, and Greek. It is best deployed in long-form reading interfaces, digital publications, and editorial products where text performance across device sizes matters.
