Grandstander

Grandstander was designed by Tyler Finck at ETC (Etcetera Type Co) and released in 2020. The design references hand-lettered comic book lettering — particularly the marker-drawn, irregular quality of mid-century American comics. Letterforms have slightly uneven stroke weights, informal construction, and the kind of character that comes from drawing letters rather than engineering them. Finck worked within a structured variable font framework, so nine weights and italics are available in a consistent system despite the drawn aesthetic. The result occupies a space between script-influenced display and informal geometric sans. It works at headline and display scale; continuous text use would require careful handling.
