Fraunces

Fraunces was designed by Phaedra Charles and Flavia Zimbardi at Undercase Type and released in 2020. It is a variable font with axes for weight, optical size, and a distinctive "wonkiness" axis that controls the degree of soft, irregular stroke quality in the letterforms. This combination of optical sizing and the wonky axis gives Fraunces a range from tightly controlled display headlines at large sizes to expressive, character-rich text at intermediate sizes. The family covers nine weights with a full italic. Its contemporary personality and multi-axis variable design make it a standout choice for editorial identities, cultural publishing, and any context where a serif needs both typographic rigour and visual distinctiveness.
