Bitter

Bitter was designed by Sol Matas as a slab serif intended primarily for screen reading. Its proportions favour on-screen legibility at body sizes, while the extended weight range — from Thin to Black — makes it equally useful for editorial headlines. The design achieves its screen performance through open apertures, generous x-height, and carefully drawn terminals rather than through softening or hinting alone. Available as a variable font spanning nine weights with full italic accompaniment, Bitter is well suited to editorial sites, news platforms, and any context requiring a versatile slab at body and display sizes.
